How could we forget Deepika’s brilliant performance for the song ‘Ghoomar’ in the movie ‘Padmaavat’? Watching her royal performance was a real treat to the eyes. She took over a month-and-a-half to learn this Ghoomar dance steps correctly.

‘Ghoomar’ the word comes from ‘ghoomna’. The Rajasthani women dance clockwise and anti-clockwise in a circle. It is a graceful and jubilant performance of any age group with easy swaying movements. In the circle they spin and dance. They unite their hands, beating palms or snapping fingers in a rhythmic manner. Synchronization is the main thing of this dance form and the dancers swirl in speed as the tempo of the dance increases.

Dhol (drum), Jhalar (an idiophone), Algoza (a kind of double flute), Dholak, Nagara, bowl–shaped drums, Shehnai (the wind instrument) and harmonium – these are used in a ‘Ghoomar’ dance.

Costumes:

Rajasthani people love vibrant colors. Here also, the group of women wear heavily embroidered colorful ghagra choli along with blouses and cover their face with veil. When the dancers twirl in circles, the ghagra made in colorful hues, flair slowly and create a rainbow of colors.

‘Ghoomar’ is performed in different occasions and festivals like Holi, Gangaur, Teej etc. Among Rajputs, the newly wed bride is also asked to perform this dance. Primary attraction of the dance is the colorful outfits and the swirling.

  1. Hi, Sayari, good know about such things about Ghoomor dance. Yes, I loved Dipika’s Ghoomar in Padmavat and read many criticisms about it. From then I had a curiosity about this dance form….but forgot to search in Google. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Be it Deepika redefining royalty in her Padmavati avatar or her intricately-designed, traditional lehnga with gorgeous Rajputaani necklace–everything screams perfection in the song. While the ever-so-ethereal Deepika swaying flawlessly is magical, and the song has captivated our imagination, not many know much about the dance form that she nearly perfected in this song. Interestingly, Ghoomar is not only an act of singing and dancing but this folk dance is also a symbol of womanhood–a rite of passage in which young girls participate, declaring that they are entering womanhood. The ghoomar dance, as well as its ensemble, are heavily praised and have received worldwide appreciation.

  3. Loved reading the wonderful background of the dance form. My mom is a Rajasthani and so I’ve familiar with the customs and culture of the state. But I still enjoyed reading this. Shall show it to mom too 🙂
